You Can Eat It?

A Facebook friend and a longtime reader sent me this pic: it’s the back cover of a 1950 Crisco cookbook that he and his wife inherited. I can’t help but note that the cover resembles some kind of an antiquated, commie flag.

Well, okay, technically the label is telling the truth. Crisco is “digestible.” So is water-soluble paper, which arguably tastes no worse than raw Crisco, although what both it or Crisco does to one’s gastro-intestinal tract during the “digestion” process isn’t exactly benign. I wonder too if Crisco as it was made and sold in the ’50s wasn’t actually healthier than its contemporary successor. Given the chemical and genetic modifiers added to everything called “food” these days, “digestibility” should probably the least of our concerns if we use this stuff to grease baking pans or add to cookie or white bread dough.

“Antiquated Commie Flag”? Man, that’s one of the funniest things I’ve read on your blog because, being in your age group and having a graphic design background myself it’s sooooo true (lol). However, it also reminds me of a lot of NASA paraphernalia from the 1960s for those of us former military brats old enough to remember “Duck and Cover” civil defense training in grammar school. I suspect that if you look at a lot of commercial product labels from that early (1950s to early 1960s) many have that Crisco look.

Speaking of advertising, public and private sector, here’s a series that you might find interesting:

    http://www.amazon.com/All-American-Ads-50s-Jim-Heimann/dp/3822811580/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1273736433&sr=8-2

It’s called “All American Ads” and each volume details a different decade. It was eye opening for me, as it showed me just how much better design was prior to the modern equipment era, and just how overrated design from the Hippie era to today really is.

Let’s adopt “IT’S DIGESTIBLE!!” as the new retort to statist nonsense (replacing “It’s All Natural, Made from Corn, and Safe in Moderation”).
