Yes, Government Makes You Sick and Fat

Yep – people are “getting it” on food. The myths, the lies, the outright fraud. There is an unprecedented amount of attention being given to the notion that the Government-Big Food-Big Agra dietary guidelines and health-and-unwellness paradigm are fraudulent, and the resisters and heretics (real foodists) were right. This article in the City Journal – “The Washington Diet” – deserves major attention for pointing out that the US government is responsible for the profusion of obesity, disease, and food fascism.

Recently, this piece – “Are Carbs More Addictive Than Cocaine?” – appeared in Details magazine. This is one of the best, short summaries I have seen that addresses the carbohydrate addiction, what makes people fat, and why people are sick. Additionally, I want to point out my very first attempt at addressing food along Atkins-Paleo lines, back when few people knew about (or cared about) the problem with carbs and government intervention on the part of Big Food and Big Agra. I evolved well beyond some of what I wrote in this article (no more grains/whole grain anything), but this piece appeared on LewRockwell.com back in 2001, way before the existence of the online paleo community. At that time, Dr. Atkins was a hero in parts of the libertarian community.

Thanks, Karen for the recap of the history.  Nearly 3 years ago when I started on my paleo journey the paleo community was just getting on its feet. One of the reasons I knew I was on the right track was somewhere along the way I realized that though I had been reading your works for years you too saw the connection between fiat money and governmental control over food, drugs and health. Again, looking forward to the day when a libertarian drinking high fructose corn syrup realizes he/she isn’t exercising freedom but rather understands that they were duped by the government into eating fiat food.

Well, that day was, “yesterday” … oh wait, I’m no longer libertarian, I’m Rothbardian… How-freaking-ever, not being a coffee drinker and unable to get Coke made with sugar that doesn’t have a label on it that says something like, “may include HFC” where does one get a cold fizzy caffeine fix???!!!!

Notice the exclamation points Mogambo Guru style. [Did that guy really retire?]

And, no, tea does Not count.
    We’re freaking doomed! HAHAah/

Clark, my only answer to your Mogambian response (and props to you for writing such a comment in his style) is to learn to drink coffee and tea.  I was into the frizzy drinks for nearly all of my life.  When I made the switch to paleo and started only drinking water, wine (on occasion), coffee, and tea all sans sugar… and that’s it… well, a shot of whiskey on every other blue moon… I said goodbye to frizzy and don’t miss it much.

But you’re right, tea does not count, it just supplements the coffee when I’m at someone’s house that isn’t a coffee drinker.

I do have a fizzy caf swig now and then (about once a week), but not many would choose Tab. I can’t understand why they insist on polluting my rat poison with a smidgen of human brain doom though. If they’d knock that off I’d probably jump up to once daily. Way to ruin a good product, coke scientists.
