Wal-Mart and the Medical-Pharmaceutical Complex

The Wall Street Journal recently ran an article on Wal-Mart’s push to get into the drug and vaccination market. It is said that Wal-Mart will now offer vaccinations beyond the standard infectious diseases, because flu and pneumonia just aren’t profitable enough anymore. Thus Wal-Mart is set to start pushing drugs and vaccinations. I find this snippet from the article to be quite telling, especially if one reads between the lines.

The moves have boosted Wal-Mart’s health-and-wellness business segment that includes pharmacy services and over-the-counter drugs and which accounted for 11% of the company’s $264.2 billion in U.S. sales last fiscal year.

“The goal is to take advantage of the fact these individuals are in our stores shopping for groceries every day,” said Dr. John Agwunobi, Wal-Mart’s president of health and wellness, and a former U.S. assistant secretary for health. “We want our customers to begin to see us as a destination not just for nutrition but for preventative health care.”

Take advantage … while they shop, oh, for stuff like paper towels, canned veggies, and Mr. Clean? Someone should assist Mr. Agwunobi in defining “preventative” health care. A spokesman from the U.S. Health Department is quoted as saying, “Making vaccines more convenient is likely to improve their uptake.”

Only good things at our local Walmart are these items I buy from time to time. Milk from a local farmer …. I can either go to his farm a couple miles from me and buy from his cooler/honor system at his home/farm…and pay 3.75 on his premises for a half gallon…OR I can go two miles in the opposite direction to Walmart and only pay 2.69 for the same product…so looks to me like walmart still plays their old tricks..you want us to sell your product, then we say how much we sell it for.

The only other thing I buy from their cooler is the Cabot cheese/super extra sharp two pounder which is a good price compared to super markets. Love Cabot’s.

As for vaccinations, cold day in hell anyone in Walmart puts a needle in me for the fake health and well being of their customers. If they keep this up, the day will come when they’ll probably have a red light set up at night, and you can get a blue light special..a quickie behind a curtain..then a vaccine to kill what just ailed you quickly.
Like maybe Gardisal..prevent cervical creeping critters.

I have always been amused at “libertarians” who worship Wal-Mart, oblivious to the fact it’s a transnational corporation, and that all corporations are creations of the State. Wal-Mart is as anti-free market as they come. First they get their imports from God knows what Third World statist hellhole; now they’re trying to kill your kids with vaccinations.
