The Denver Post on the Visible Hand.

What exactly is left of heroic capitalism?

“It’s fascism,” said Lew Rockwell of the free market think tank Mises Institute in Alabama. Rockwell said he was referring to some fascist systems where the government used overwhelming power to prop up major businesses at the expense of average citizens.

“It’s big government in cahoots with big business,” he explained. “We’re less capitalist than we were before. We’re not entirely fascist, and we’re not entirely socialist, but we’re certainly not a free market. We’re a very hampered market.”

Rockwell referred to newly announced FBI probes into the short selling and rumor-mongering among hedge funds that may have contributed to the stock market upheavals.

“This is the kind of thing Mussolini did,” Rockwell said, conjuring the image of the Italian dictator imprisoning people he claimed were a threat to the economy. “It’s very, very disturbing.”
