The Grain Lobby

The website Medical News Today is to medicine what the Oprah Winfrey Show is to intellectual advancement. The website’s latest bit of schlock is “Daily Bread May Protect From Cardiovascular Disease.” This is not an Onion headline. The same old, conventional wisdom on lipid profiles is trotted out as fact in another shoddy piece of research that comes from the University of Barcelona.

An important point to note about this study is that healthier lipid profiles were found among those who consumed bread daily, not sporadically. It also revealed that lower insulin levels were found among those who consumed bread daily, helping to prevent the development of insulin resistance (when cells are unable to respond to insulin) which is associated with a high risk of cardiovascular disease.

Of course, bread is the most basic food in Spain. And so the argument goes on. Thanks to James Nellis for the link. Follow me on Twitter @karendecoster.com.

To hear the statin pushers tell it, there wre never any dissenters from the lipid hypothesis. As a medical transcriptionist, narly every doctor hands out statins like candy. And those patients who just say no to statins are harangued and told to eat a “heart-healthy” diet, eat margarine, and avoid all animal fat. Yeah, I don’t really trust doctors and avoid them whenever I can.
