I thought I was listening to Mad Magazine Radio yesterday when I heard about the National Bed Bug Summit. But the dial was on FOX radio, I am sure of it. Apparently, this summit came about because the Federal Bed Bug Working Group had failed to provide a solution to the problem. And then I heard Mayor Bloomberg call for a Bed Bug Czar. Keep in mind that Bloomberg already has a 10-person Bed Bug Advisory Board. The Bloomberg-Advisory Board plan for dealing with bed bugs will look like this:

…key elements of the plan include creating a bed bug task force headed by an entomologist, a public education push, a city-funded “Bed Bug Academy” for building & property managers, assigning bed bug cases higher priority in Housing Court, and giving stronger rights of access to bed bug-infested apartments. The battle plan will also establish a clear protocol for residents dealing with a bed bug problem, including a “triage” plan detailing what to do in the first 24 hours.

People are bored and disillusioned since the non-pandemic flu pandemic became a megaflop, so the bed bugs fill the necessary gap for people who need to fear something, anything … that only the government can solve through the means of bureaucrat planning, Czars, advisory boards, public policy, and Three Stooges reruns.

We can add another item to the list of everyday, victimless, peaceful activities that shall soon become a crime: distracted walking. From the article:

After targeting drivers who paid more attention to their phone calls and text messages than the road, lawmakers in Arkansas and New York are now looking to crack down on pedestrians equally distracted by their own electronic gadgets.

The Arkansas decree aims to ban walkers from having headphones on, in both ears, while they are “parallel or adjacent to a street, road, intersection or highway.” However, runners and cyclists would have a tremendous freedom advantage because they would be allowed to have a headphone in one ear. Undoubtedly, proposals like this will go viral, as authoritarians from state-to-state like to “better” their totalitarian competitors. These laws would be great for the economy because they would create a new market for one-ear headphones! We might be best served with a federal law, with Ray LaHood as our Distraction Czar. And since you know how government likes to cover its tyranny in fluffy slogans (like “Click It or Ticket”), we can call the new federal campaign: “Snip Your Sennheisers.”

A coalition of lobbies has asked Barney Frank to create an agency that will act as a “watchdog” over the nation’s auto dealers. This would fall under the jurisdiction of the Consumer Financial Protection Agency, another proposed Obama agency that has yet to be created. So these folks want an agency within an agency, and the head of that agency within the larger agency would presumably be the Auto Dealer Czar. But the auto dealers are requesting that they be exempt from the regulations of the new (larger) agency that has not yet been created.

Concerning this new agency, which will be created, the Obama regime, in opposition to Barney Frank’s original plans, wants to regulate all dealer transactions, including a cash sale or a transaction where the buyer obtains his own financing. So, this new agency is supposed to advocate for the consumer, watching over those unfortunate folks who get ripped off by predatory financial transactions. Yet they want oversight for non-financed transactions (cash sales) and self-financed transactions. Smells like a totalitarian, anti-privacy coup to me.

The situation between Cambridge Police Sgt. James Crowley and Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. has received way too much publicity, thanks to Obama’s involvement with his off-the-cuff comments. It seems Herr Obama desires to get some positive mileage out of this incident by playing peacemaker.

President Obama’s highly anticipated sit-down with Cambridge Police Sgt. James Crowley and Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. over some brews is expected to take place early this week, administration officials said Sunday.

Obama extended the invitation Friday in phone calls to the two men as he tried to calm a furor over racial profiling and his comments this week that the police “acted stupidly” in arresting Gates. He invited both to share a beer.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs told FOX News on Sunday that he isn’t sure whether the meeting has been scheduled but added that the White House is hopeful it will occur “in the next several days.”

Yes, the president will sit down, like a regular, basketball-playing guy, and share a beer with the two men while dozens of cameras flash in the background. And surely the Changemeisters will eat it up. There are some race-obsessed leftists who follow Obama’s every move on race issues.

Since Messiah Obama has a cadre of czars already, it mught be fitting that he appoint a Race Czar.

Update: The media that follows the messiah’s every move is now obsessed with the kind of beer he will drink at his race summit.

Does the president choose a lager for Thursday’s gathering? A porter? Maybe a wheat beer? Does he pick something light to help the men with the Washington, D.C., summer heat?

James Oberstar (D., Minn.), chairman of the House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, wants to establish a federal Office of Livability that will tell Americans when they can drive, where they can drive, what they can drive, and how they will live. And of course, this will include a Livability Czar who will “ensure that States and metropolitan areas achieve progress towards national transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals.” Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood recently said he wants to “coerce people out of their cars.” Through force, LaHood said, “I think we can change people’s behavior.” LaHood, in fact, is so entirely arrogant, he actually said this at the National Press Club:

“Some conservative groups are wary of the livable communities program, saying it’s an example of government intrusion into people’s lives,” said the moderator. “How do you respond?”

“About everything we do around here is government intrusion in people’s lives,” said LaHood. “So have at it.”

My response is, How do you respond to that? Because government officials reign supreme in LaHood’s empowered world, why would anyone dare question their coercion, violence, and force? George Will, for one, was considered an ass for questioning LaHood’s forced way of life. Will referred to LaHood as the Secretary of Behavior Modification.
