Some 1911 Peppers

Here are some photos I came across today from my September 2009 trip to the Four Corners region. I was breaking in my new Taurus 1911. I had many jams with crappy Blazer ammo (only stuff I could find) that I’ll never use again.

I had the whole place to myself on a weekday afternoon.

Some head peppers with my first shots out of my new Taurus 1911 .45

In the Four Corners area of the West, at a private gun range in the mountains (7,000 ft).

Awesome sauce, Karen! Sorry to hear about the bad luck with Blazer ammo, though—I take it this was the aluminum cased version? Other than that, I figure it’s all good.

I’ve always been a fan of the 1911, and your Taurus version is a wonderful example of how the market had driven the design forward. “Back in the day” you could only get a 1911 from Colt, and you’d think they made it out of gold, the way they priced it. Plus, it had itsy bitsy sights, indifferent fit and finish, and would seldom feed anything besides hardball.

Ah, but now the market has given us other, better choices. Viva Brasilia!

    PS: Love your smile, too!

Lewis — I was in the middle of nowhereland (mountains near Mesa Verde) and I was lucky to find one gun shop with any .45 ammo at all–Blazer alum casing. I was told that it’s not .45 country out there – it’s revolver country (as you can imagine), and so .45 was not plentiful as it is where I live.

Great pics Karen. I’m not a 1911 buff, but I heard the Springfields are pretty decent. I usually go with Winchester White Box .45 FMJs. They’re widely available and I never had a jam in my Sig P220.

Michael, I know what good ammo is. I used the Blazers because, as I mentioned in the post, it was the only .45 ammo available anywhere within 120 miles…..

At first I thought it said, “Some 1911 Prepper’s”

The writer who advises people to get 357′s in rifle and handgun, because of ammo sharing and availability, just got a point.

And why Did you use Blazer ammo? Heh.

Looks like you were having fun, too much fun, the fun cops might’ve put a stop to that, good thing you were in the middle of nowhere.

    Very tight.

Clark, I used Blazer ammo alum-cased ammo because I was in the middle of nowhere, and one gun shop had 100 rounds of Blazer – nothing else available anywhere.

Maybe “Heh” didn’t come across quite right?

As in, Heh – you know I was kidding about the Blazer ammo,… right?

And maybe I’ve been reading too much survival advice – but I gather from what Ferfal says – that Blazer ammo you purchased was worth more than you paid for it,… it gave you practice at unexpected jams (where can you buy a can of that?) and clearing them, something owners of automatics should be good at doing, per Ferfal anyway,… I haven’t had a jam on a handgun yet, but I’ve had a number shotguns do so, for me it was a disappointing feeling, the boom didn’t go bang, dang! WTF? And at that point you learn if you or those around you know what to do and how to clear a round.

Karen, send me an email next time. I have a ton of the stuff! Next day air on me!

I picked up a .40 in 2008 and at the time, the ammo crunch was in full swing. I could only get some Federal American Eagle nonsense. Fortunately no FTF, FTE issues…

Upon further reflection… perhaps you were lucky not to have experienced slam fire, what with the straight wall of a .45 bullet and all,… hopefully it was just duds. Supposedly tapered ammo reduces the chances of slam fire, but I don’t know.
