Seat Belt Profit Center

According to a recent story (which was also noted in the Detroit News), the state of Michigan’s seat belt-o-rama netted the state some nice profit after the costs were borne by the federal government’s tax slaves. Essentially, you may have paid the state twice to screw you over: once to fund the mega-scam that was federally funded under a safety mantra, and then a second time on the ticket, if you were one of the unfortunate victims of a double whammy.

Yeah, these robbers have stolen from me several times. They call it the “Driver’s Responsibility Fee”. It’s essentially double jeopardy and so therefore anti-American: the city charges you once for the seatbelt/speeding/whatever ticket (usually around $100), and then the Secretary of State (that’s Michigan’s DMV, to those outsiders) double-dips for an even larger amount (both times for me it was $1,000).

So it’s double jeopardy and, therefore, a flagrant breaking of the real law (the 5th amendment of the Constitution). But, please, don’t try to explain that to the ‘roided up cop with drooped eyelids because he’ll say you’re being “aggressive and belligerent” and throw you in a cage for the night, nor to the soulless bureaucrat at the Secretary of State office whose idea of justice and the law is reading the manual off of her computer screen in response to everything you say.

So, yeah, as somebody who’s poor and been robbed by the government many times in this regard….I have a lot of bitterness in me!
