It seems we are getting close to seeing anti-DWI locks/control systems become federal law for “convicted drunk drivers.” Remember the kind of people who are convicted of this crime: people who have never harmed anyone, and people who fall asleep in their car, while parked, because they see that as the better option as opposed to driving after drinking. I suggest that these devices will soon be on every car sold or purchased in America, and the control device will be focused on much more than alcohol on your breath. For instance, a fingerprint or ID reader that will not allow your car to start if the government’s database determines that you haven’t followed the government’s multitude of mandates, such as getting your mandatory swine flu vaccination, registering for Selective Service, etc. From the article:

The current version of a federal transportation funding bill, which could be debated by Congress this fall, requires all 50 states to mandate the devices for anyone convicted of drunken driving or risk losing federal highway money.

A Borg-like assimilation of all human activity into a computerized, bureaucratically managed collective. But with the dollar becoming an international joke, and tax revenues plummeting along with employment, can the self-fancied Masters of the Universe make it work? I have no doubt they will try, but they are still thinking in bubble terms, e.g., an endless credit supply to pay the “civil service” drones and enforcement goons. Public resentment is building (see Obama’s falling poll numbers), and we may presume that even the duller public school graduates will become ornery once they realize that the welfare state has plenty of beating sticks for their growling faces but no more tax-funded carrots for their growling bellies.

In addition to horror stories cited in the post, I want to add a friend’s experience. Convicted 10 years ago on a second OWI in Iowa, he has been without his license the entire time. The state demands that he have an Ignition Interlock instilled before he can have his license “reinstated”, despite receiving his 10 year chip this spring.
The situation makes him one of the most law abiding motorists on the roads.
