Lou Reed, RIP

Lou Reed has passed at 71 years of youth.

In case you never heard it, here’s Lou Reed’s Egg Cream from the excellent Harvey Keitel movie, “Blue in the Face” (Directed by Wayne Wang & Paul Auster). One of the most grungy, ambiguous guitar licks I have ever heard.

One of the biggest problems that modern pop is facing is the death of the Avant Garde. The last pop avant garde statements in popular music would probably be the Seattle scene 20 years ago (none of which I particularly liked, but that’s not the point). I live in Austin Texas, the self proclaimed ‘Live music Capital of the World’. But none of what’s happening here down of 6th Street has any boldness of concept to it. Lou Reed would most assuredly fail in the modern Live Music Capital of the World. I saw Iggy Pop play at the Bay Street club in Sag Harbor, NY back in the ’80′s and you either get these things or you don’t. But that’s not the point. The question becomes whether or not this overly sanitized safe world can possibly tolerate the next Lou Reed. I don’t think so.
