@Amy, read about 25 years ago, that a nutritionist at John Hopkins Univ med school who worked with kids that had epileptic seizures, actually stopped having seizures when on high fat diets. They no longer had to take seizure meds. She had a hunch that was the problem and her hunch was right on..no more seizures.

I type this in a location in southwest asia eating every meal in a military dining facility. I've also eaten plenty of meals in CONUS dining facilities. This is a total smokescreen; there's has not been in recent past any shortage of fruits and vegetables. I don't know what the 'revolution' is, they are there, in adequate amounts, albeit not enough leafy greens or yams/sweet potatoes. What there is however is a shortage of clean, decent proteins and good fats. The only constant for lunch/dinner are overcooked skinless chicken breasts. What varies in the other meat, but it's usually something processed, breaded, gravied, and/or overcooked. Steak shows up once a week and MUST be at least well done; disgusting and dry. On to fats: no coconut milk or avocados to be had. There is oil on the tables which I use liberally on my overcooked veggies, but there's no way in hell it's olive oil, probably just a plain vegetable oil. Sour cream shows up occasionally and mixed nuts are always out for the taking. I've seen avocado's here, but sadly only come out for holidays and I-kid-you-not, decoration--then they disappear, never to be seen again esp as guac or something cool. I order cans of coconut milk from amazon.com to supplement my fat intake since I'm apparently too stupid to get on board w/ a low fat diet.

Yes, this is what the troops really need -- to be surviving on a plateful of carrot sticks and lowfat cottage cheese in a war zone. Meanwhile, I'm sitting at a computer making sure I get adequate fat to fuel my brain per this "Evolutionary Psychiatry" blog item on Psychology Today by psychiatrist Dr. Emily Deans on how a high-fat diet can help the brain work better:
