Galt’s Gulch in Colorado

The other day, I was driving a rented Ford Explorer east on Highway 46, from Utah, through La Sal Junction and across the Colorado state line. I was listening to a 1970s-80s radio station, and “Life in the Fast Lane” by the Eagles came on the radio. Then the engine oil light started beeping at me incessantly, demanding that the engine oil be changed now. Then Jackson Browne’s “Running on Empty” came on. Hmmm – headed for a bad day, perhaps? I kept on driving, and as I crossed into Colorado, with nothing else around except for a few desolate ranches, I came across this road sign. For those not familiar with the work of Ayn Rand, Galt’s Gulch is the “secluded refuge in a valley of Colorado where the men of ability have retreated after relinquishing participation in American society.” On this day, I was on my way to Ouray, Colorado, a town that Rand and her husband visited so she could research the area in preparation for writing Atlas Shrugged.

Incredible to actually see a sign “In honor of John Galt”. I had no idea that the Gulch in Rand’s book was based on a real place. I recall the thrill I felt when I read that book, ATLAS SHRUGGED, back in the sixties, along with all of Ayn Rand’s other books. In between babies, I devoured each of her books. It was always a toss up for me between The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged as my favorite. I have often wondered why some folks were not turned on by her writings, for I so easily connected with all she conveyed in her message of self reliance along with her ideas on production/labor/talent/money/and why all are necessary to thinking peoples. It is wonderful to know that the fifty-two-year-old novel ranked #33 among’s top-selling books on 13 January, 2009. Her message is more apropos today than ever as we see this administration trying to stranglehold those who make a culture and business purr finely. With each passing day we now hear more nonsense that any thinking individual would view as insane policies and directions for our country. John Galt, the hero of Atlas Shrugged, offers that “a free mind and a free market are corollaries.” Truer words were never spoken.
Rand’s, Atlas Shrugged has only been outsold by one other book, the Bible. Unfortunately I don’ think that Rand got her just dues, not only for her outstanding writing abilities, but moreso for her economic and philosophical outlook. Thank you Karen, for sharing this new tidbit on Rand..and Galt’s Gulch.

Don’t let the liberals know this isn’t a contemporary person. They’ll have the sign removed under some P.C. policy that it’s insulting to someone with a huge, manmade, chip on their shoulder. Go Colorado! Too bad Gods country is so full of liberals.

Actually, Atlas Shrugged was voted most influential, second only to The Bible, in a poll taken of Book-of-the Month Club members a few years ago. Maybe that fact bodes well for the future of our country.

This is the beautiful and isolated Paradox Valley. I’ve driven through here several times, including a week and a half ago when I was reflecting on how much it reminded me of Galt’s Gulch. I wish I would have been looking closer and seen this sign.

They say that the Lord works in strange ways. It sounds to me like for some strange reason your oil light came on just as you got there, so you would get to see that sign. I have heard of things like that happening before.

Thanks for posting that. I’ll have to keep that in mind the next time I go to Colorado.

BTW when your oil light comes on, it usually means your oil is getting low, not that it needs to be changed. Although some of the newer cars will tell you when it needs to be changed, and I expect that it is a separate warning light from the “low oil” ones you usually see.

Because of her books, I have found that it simply reinstated my beliefs about right or wrong, and economic systems.  It is truly amazing how closely she has interpreted the happenings and how applicable they are today.  Whenever she wrote them, she could see the world turning into what it is today, but didn’t know that it would be an ongoing battle throughout the century and into the next.  When John Galt says that he is only telling people what they already know, it proves true for those that read her books.  It is what I already knew and hadn’t realized yet.  Now that I know what I knew, I have become a better person and capitalist, although I don’t agree with everything she says (existence of no God… He does).  This is almost forgivable in sight of everything else she has done for the United States population.

In 2008 I was volunteering at McCain National Hdqtrs. in Crystal City, VA.  I kept getting phone calls stating that anyone, as long as they used a working credit card number, that they could use any name and give to Obama’s campaign.  Doubting the truth of this (and attempting to donate to the McCain Campaign first), I used the name Dagny Taggart, 7 John Galt Way, Galt’s Gulch, CO.  Using a CO zip code and my credit card number, I donated $15 (minimum) to Obama as Dagny Taggart!  It went right through.  Only an ERROR message to McCain camp.  All this to say that I have received 3 emails…(yes, I emailed Obama hdqtrs. and told them how unethical they were!)…from Obama in the past 2 months with trip giveaways to enter drawings to ‘spend a day’ with the President!  Hotel stays, airline tickets and all!  Obviously, they’re still hoping that I, Dagny Taggart, might still turn to the dark side!  Mixed emotions with each new email to Dagny… LOVE seeing her name, yet despise Obama more with each new ‘offer’ from that despicable man!  About to try my debit card on the today’s latest ‘offer’!!  Wondering……..
