Hitler’s Greatest Hits

The movie Downfall has produced some great YouTube spoofs, and another one came across my desk today: “Hitler Finds Out Scott Brown Won Massachusetts Senator Seat.”

I still like the “balloon boy” spoof – that has to be one of the better uses of this movie clip.

Then there is “Hitler gets scammed on eBay.”

With a slightly different spin, “Hitler wants Burger King.”

And finally, Hitler learns that Jay Leno is going back to the Tonight Show in place of Conan O’Brien.

Just the other day, an article appeared about the popularity of this spoof. What does director Oliver Hirschbiegel say about it?

“Someone sends me the links every time there’s a new one,” says the director, on the phone from Vienna. “I think I’ve seen about 145 of them! Of course, I have to put the sound down when I watch. Many times the lines are so funny, I laugh out loud, and I’m laughing about the scene that I staged myself! You couldn’t get a better compliment as a director.”

I’ve watched many of these spoofs, and one thing I always notice about them is that they contain dozens of spelling and grammar errors. Of course, I always turn them up, and even my MacBook Pro has a nice Logistics speaker bar hooked up to it, which produces amazing sound and bass. The combination of the volume and the yelling scares the crap out of my dogs, and so they go running to the landing each time I listen to one of these spoofs. Just tonight, as they lay around peacefully, I set the MacBook on the floor next to them (minus the speaker bar hookup), and turned up the volume on my rinky-dink speaker that comes standard on the Mac. As soon as Hitler started to yell, they booked over to the landing!

There are so many of them now. It’s also fun to read the negative comments on YouTube for almost every one. I think mostly it’s people who haven’t heard of the movie at all and are kind of shocked that someone is parodying Hitler like this.

Then of course there are people who think that it is inappropriate to involve Hitler in any kind of humor. On the contrary, making fun of tyrants and monsters is one of the best ways to deal with them. Mel Brooks understands this as well as anyone.

I did upload my own last night. I don’t think it’s as good as Balloon Boy or some of the others, but we’ll see (it’s biased toward my favorite NFL team, admittedly). I agree it is important to maintain proper grammar and formatting for the subtitles (no fading in and out, for example). Also, the cussing, if used, has to be used sparingly and judiciously, like hot sauce in a Cajun recipe.

what?? Michael, you moved to Louisiana, and already the Saints are your favorite team? Oh come on now, admit that it’s fair weather fever…. :–) If they were 4-12…?

Karen–maybe so, but since I’ve moved here from Michigan I’ve grown to love the place, and the Saints fan base is among the best in the NFL in many ways. For me, they’re like “Lions South.” Right now they’re having the season that I’ve wished for the Lions to have all my life.

I know Minny hasn’t been to the big dance in awhile, so part of me wants them to do well tomorrow. I’m sure that feeling is mutual around here, particularly since Brett Favre grew up not far from here. I’ll root for them against the AFC champ, should they get the win.

This is one of the best Hitler spoofs yet. Really good stuff, but the part about Obama having “failed lunch” made me about lose it…
