Grain Free = Freedom

I snapped this funny photo in a Pet Supplies Plus the other day. If you are a paleo-primal real foodist, like me, who is grain-free (or on a “low-grain” instead of a lowfat diet), and a libertarian who covets freedom, you may want to buy this dog food for your furry friend who shouldn’t be eating grain either. These products are still very expensive, as you can note by the shelf price, but it is wonderful that the market is bringing these products to consumers as an alternative to the government food pyramid (even for doggies). Some entrepreneur who created this product clearly understands that the Government Grain Pushers are anti-freedom.

I’ve been using a combinationof blue buffalo and a homemade ‘wet’ food made from real chicken for my cats for over a year now. They’ve never been healthier.

And as far as expense goes, one bag will typically last usa month. If we really love our animals the way we say we do, this is a small price to pay to keep our critters around longer!

Karen, what size bag is that? If it’s a 40-lb bag, then that price, for a grain-free product, really isn’t all that unreasonable. In fact, I’d say that being grain- free means less empty carbs, which in turn means that your dog will need to eat less of it to be satisfied.

We’ve been trying to find the ideal food for our two dogs since they were puppies (they’re now six and five) and it’s been a maddening experience. Either the food is largely grain-free but apparently tastes terrible (I wonder why so many vets push the Hill’s Science Diet food? We’ve never had a dog that would eat that stuff), or contains some other meat by-product that causes allergies. I’ll have to see if I can find this food locally.

We buy this sort of stuff for our dog and over the years we’ve seen the quality evolve. There are many grain-free, sugar free, processed-oil free options now, though some brands are deceptive.

The sad part is when I go to the pet store to get that sort of food, and I see morbidly obese people buying the paleo options for their dogs. They would probably do better to eat what the dog eats. At times, I want to say something, but I keep quiet. At least the dog will be lean and healthy.

Liber – it was a small bag (18 or 20 lbs). Also, look at Diamond dog food – much cheaper, and it is soy free, wheat free, corn free.

My dogs have been paleo for several years. No grain. My chow mix – who suffers from lupus – has had no meds for her problem for months. Prior to that, she got meds when her condition flared up. She probably would have been dead years ago on a standard, “high quality” grain and some meat dogfood diet.

Incidentally, avoiding grain helps humans as well.
