Government Coercion Improves Our Collective HealthTuesday, June 21, 2011
Another safety nazi crusade from the save-you-from-yourself nannies, this time in King County, Washington.
People who hope to beat the summer heat by swimming, floating or boating on rivers in King County must wear a life vest or face an $86 fine.
This new ordinance applies to kids 12 and under when on a boat that is less than 19 feet long; people who are intertubing, rafting, using a surfboard, canoe or kayak; and anyone wading more than 5 feet from shore or in water more than 4 feet deep. It also might require anglers to wear live vests if they wade too far into the river. The county bureaucrats are worried that they don’t have enough water safety officers to enforce the new water commandments. A councilwoman, Julie Patterson, declared, “We are improving the health for everyone because of these laws that we pass.” I think some people really believe what they say.
