Comments Off is apparently shutting down. After all, how tired can one get of berating someone who is so fanatically silly so as to be beyond berating anymore? Some funny Coulter-bashing from the website:

* “On TV, Coulter conveys all the feminine warmth of a water moccasin, if you can imagine a pit viper with silicone implants.”

* “More insidious is how she mimics the outward form of real journalism without its content, how lazy and/or cowardly establishment types let her get away with it…” [Rings true.]

* “She believes that there are really only two kinds of people in the world: those who agree with her and those who are evil and stupid liberals. Only she, and those who agree with her, has a monopoly on goodness and truth.”

* “Writing in The Washington Post, one conscientious conservative, Christopher Caldwell, describes Slander as “a piece of political hackwork. The deeper into her subject she gets, the more she resorts to the tools of calumny and propaganda she professes to critique.”

The website quotes her from her June 2002 appearance on the Today Show:

“Political debate with liberals is basically impossible in America because liberals are calling names while conservatives are trying to make arguments…It’s really all the same lie [that liberals tell], that conservatives are either stupid or scarily weird and therefore you don’t have to deal with their ideas.”

Well, I gotta admit, the personal attack stuff is fun at times, and there’s surely a place for it, but it’s mystifying how she can get away with writing cheesy book after cheesy book with the same thesis: neocons good, lefties bad, blah-blah-blah, because I said so, and I’ve included lots of footnotes this time, so now do I qualify as “scholarly?” People apparently buy this stuff, and see some twisted virtue in it. Oh well; to paraphrase what someone emailed to me last week: since the average IQ is 100, about half of all folks are sitting below that line. Ann smartly sucks them in.

And yes, there is a bigger boob than Coulter: Sean Hannity. How the heck did this BORING, know-nothing pipsqueak get a radio and TV show? “Conservatism” of this sort (note my quotation marks) is one embarrassing moment after another.
