If you never watch People & Power on Al Jazeera, here is a very interesting edition of the show from 2010 on “Drug Money.” This is a very good film that exposes the lies and fraud of Big Pharma and the medical establishment (one and the same), though the film leaves out investigation of the enabler of this powerful oligarchy, which is government.

Turn to the 7:00 mark and note the interview with the whistleblower from Pfizer who was trained to lie, and when he asked too many questions about Bextra and its off-label marketing he was put on administrative leave. When he and four other whistleblowers were awarded $7.4 million from Pfizer in a legal settlement, the company “accepted full responsibility for improper past promotional practices” for Bextra, yet it denied the allegations made by those five individuals. The Bextra case is one of the largest drug settlements ever.

Also, at 13:00 of the video is the story of Risperdal, a drug marketed for the psychiatric industry for treating schizophrenia and other psychiatric “disorders.” It has also been used to treat bipolar disorder children. Many male children developed breasts from using the drug. A professor from Harvard Medical School, Joseph Biederman, is the guy who spearheaded the effort “to fuel a controversial 40-fold increase from 1994 to 2003 in the diagnosis of pediatric bipolar disorder.” A quote from a brief piece in the New York Times:

An inquiry by Senator Charles E. Grassley, Republican of Iowa, revealed last year that Dr. Biederman earned at least $1.6 million in consulting fees from drug makers from 2000 to 2007 but failed to report all but about $200,000 of this income to university officials, according to information given Congressional investigators.

Court documents dating over several years that Dr. Biederman wants sealed show that he told the drug giant Johnson & Johnson that planned studies of its medicines in children would yield results benefiting the company.

By failing to report income, Dr. Biederman, and a colleague in the psychiatry department at Harvard Medical School, Dr. Timothy E. Wilens, may have violated federal and university research rules designed to police potential conflicts of interest. Some of their research is financed by government grants.

Biederman, who was also the director of the Johnson & Johnson Center for Pediatric Psychopathology Research at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, is described this way:

…The world’s most prominent advocate of diagnosing bipolar disorder in even the youngest children and of using antipsychotic medicines to treat the disease.

Biederman was on the payroll of Big Pharma to the tune of millions of dollars. At the 15:28 point in the video, while being interviewed under oath he was asked his rank, to which he replied “full Professor.” When asked what comes after that, he replied, “God.” Dr. Biederman also considers him to be one of the most forceful advocates of aggressive treatment for preschoolers (meaning, using powerful antipsychotic drugs to treat them), yet he also states that he has no idea about the extent of the use of Risperdal in children. According to the Al Jazeera investigation, before any research was done on the use of Risperdal in children, Johnson & Johnson had already decided that the outcome of the research would be that its drug was effective and safe. Note that Johnson & Johnson paid for the research center for Dr. Biederman at Harvard that bears the company name.

A few days ago, Bloomberg ran this story: “Johnson & Johnson Agree to Pay $1 Billion in Risperdal Marketing Probe.”

The Food and Drug Administration approved Risperdal in 1993 for psychotic disorders including schizophrenia. That market is limited, and J&J’s Janssen unit sought to sell Risperdal for bipolar disorder, dementia, mood and anxiety disorders and other unapproved uses, according to documents in a lawsuit against J&J by the state of Louisiana. It was later approved for other uses.

Bloomberg writes that Risperdal “generated worldwide sales of $24.2 billion from 2003 to 2010, reaching $4.5 billion in 2007. After that, J&J lost patent protection and sales declined.”

What is not surprising about this film is how the US government – department of health, FBI, etc. – is represented as the crime fighter and peoples’ protector, rather than the entity that empowers the medical establishment, Big Pharma, and the culture of corporatocracy. Patrick Burns from the organization Taxpayers Against Fraud states that, “the industry has a deeply entrenched culture of corruption.” As does its government enablers.

Now your dog needs a flu shot – from the Wall Street Journal. Merck & Co. is pushing their doggie flu vaccines. Look for the ramp-up in mandatory dog flu vaccines:

Hudson Highlands Veterinary Medical Group in Hopewell Junction, N.Y., administers an average of 60 dog flu shots a month and will soon require vaccination for dogs undergoing elective procedures, such as spaying and neutering, that require hospital admission.

Morris Animal Inn in Morristown, N.J., says it will require flu vaccinations starting next year. Camp Bow Wow, a national doggie daycare chain and overnight facility, plans to partner with a veterinarian to offer a flu vaccination clinic next year in its Long Island City, N.Y., location. And at Biscuits and Bath LLC, a boarding facility with multiple locations in New York City, management recently sent email blasts to clients about the flu and posted warnings on its Facebook page.

Too bad that critical thinking and truth does not spread as quickly as the lies and myths. As an aside, both my veterinarian and I have decided that my two dogs (both are very large breeds, aged 15 and 16, living well beyond their normal life span, even with having cancer, hip dysplasia, etc.) will not be getting their “usual” shots again this year – rabies, distemper, bordetella, etc. Together, we have made the decision to deny these shots for the last 2-3 years. The immunity from a rabies shot lasts for years. He gives me shot certificates should I need to kennel them (occasionally). He doesn’t buy into the hysteria, and in fact, he admits that the vaccinations are much harder on them (and their geriatric, fragile systems) than than any perceived benefits they can possibly get from them. I drive one hour each way to visit the right veterinarian who is willing to challenge the conventional wisdom and do what is right for my dogs. My dogs, being part primal, get eggs and meat once or twice per week.

An “expert” panel appointed by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute is recommending that all children start taking Lipitor be tested for high cholesterol (as defined by the special interest medical establishment) starting at age nine. The American Academy of Pediatrics has endorsed this lunacy. For children with “high” cholesterol, first comes the government prescription (following the government’s high-carb, anti-fat dietary guidelines), and when that doesn’t work, then comes the Big Pharma solution.

The guidelines recommend that children ages 9 to 11 whose total cholesterol level is elevated get retested with a more specific test — which requires 12 hours of fasting beforehand — to measure their exact level of LDL, or “bad” cholesterol. Those with an LDL level at or above 130 milligrams per deciliter should receive dietary counseling that maps out an eating plan rich in fruits, vegetables, and lean protein and low in foods rich in saturated fat, such as red meat and whole-milk dairy foods. They’re also encouraged to get an hour of exercise every day.

If those approaches don’t work after six months to lower cholesterol levels, medications can be tried.

Of course, it’s a small mention that the greatest cash cow in the history of the pharmaceutical industry, Lipitor, is fading away without its glory days of patents and government protection – and yes, I repeat myself. An article on Reuters notes that:

Lipitor’s U.S. patent expires on November 30, unleashing a wave of cheap generics and ending a fabled run that began in 1997.

“There’s Lipitor and then there’s the rest,” said Michael Kleinrock, research director of IMS Institute, which tracks sales of prescription drugs. “This is a real giant in the history of our industry and we may not see its likes for a while.”

The article goes on to describe how the world’s next kingpin drugs are those for rheumatoid arthritis and Alzheimer’s, that is, until the pharmaceutical industry can come up with the perfect fat-melting drug that will cure the world of obesity.

Another scheme to fight fatness: The Pharmaceutical Daily Journal (WSJ) is touting a new drug “that kills a type of fat cell by choking off its blood supply caused significant weight loss in obese monkeys, potentially setting the stage for a new pharmaceutical approach to attacking obesity.” In other words, a drug that attacks your body and kills off cells. Surely, this drug won’t have any side effects.

Now for the real important information buried in bits and pieces within the article. The study was performed at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and rights to the drug have been licensed to Ablaris Therapeutics Inc. The husband and wife research team, Renata Pasqualini and Wadih Arap, have rights to any royalties from the drug, and both of them are investors in Ablaris, as is M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. The study using monkeys was funded by the National Institutes of Health, and the initial study on humans will be funded by M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

So lemme understand: M.D. Anderson Cancer Center hosts researchers who are performing a cancer study and developing a new drug, and that cancer study churns out an alternative use (anti-obesity) for the drug being studied. So M.D. Anderson then funds a study using obese humans to look at the potential for that alternative use, and then they license the drug to a pharmaceutical company and then invest in that company, as do the researchers who did the study.

Do people really believe that the medical establishment and its enablers wants to cure disease and obesity?

The pharmaceutical-political complex never fails to leave me dumbfounded in response to its brazen and totalitarian attacks upon individuals by way of the coercive machine known as government that has a monopoly on raiding your home and telling you how to live your life. This story on CalWatchdog reports on the Gardasill Bill, otherwise called AB 499, that is summarized as:

Existing law allows minors to consent to specified forms of medical or dental treatment.

This bill would, in addition, allow a minor who is 12 years of age or older to consent to medical care related to the prevention of a sexually transmitted disease.

This means that Gardasil, which is manufactured by Merck, can be administered to children without parental permission. After all, parents who think they know best for their own children are such a nuisance. This bill would allow the purveyors of public school enslavement to poke your children with Big Pharma’s potent drugs under the guise of ‘protecting’ them from a potential health issue for which you, the parent, are denying that ‘protection.’ CalWatchdog cross-matched votes with Merck corporate contributions and came up with some very foreseeable results – dough in the coffers for those who said Yea to the bill. Who will pay Merck to stick your children? The state and federal governments will split the cost of the body invasions, meaning you will pay for it.

The California Catholic Daily reports that California’s bishops are appealing to governor Jerry Brown to veto this act of assault upon children who are not equipped to make these decisions about their bodies and health. Here’s a paragraph from the article:

Among the supporters of AB 499 are the American Civil Liberties Union, the Los Angeles Lesbian and Gay Center, NARAL Pro-Choice California, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California and Women’s Health Specialists – a chain of nine California abortion clinics that also goes by the name Feminist Women’s Health Center.

These are all of the usual suspects who think that it takes a village – and Big Pharma – to raise your child. Thanks to Scott Lazarowitz for the heads-up.

The government-medical establishment myths and scaremongering are being kept alive by the government schools that want to screen your children for mental illness and diagnose them with bogus disorders. The mainstream media is consumed by repeating these myths and cranking up the fear, and they call it “news.” Here’s a paragraph from a recent Wall Street Journal article:

Rep. Ron Paul (R., Texas) recently reintroduced legislation that would prohibit federal funds from being used for any mandatory mental-health screening program without parental consent, including TeenScreen. (TeenScreen’s Ms. Flynn says that parental consent is always required.) Because there are errors and false positives on such tests—kids who aren’t really depressed but may answer questions in a way that makes them seem so—opponents also fear children will be wrongly identified as problematic and stigmatized, or that parents will be penalized if they don’t seek treatment.

Here’s what happens when you deny the government-medical establishment’s protocol for treatment (powerful, hallucinogenic, psychotropic drugs): they come and take your children and haul you away in handcuffs as a criminal. I wrote about the TeenScreen racket in 2006. The website TeenScreen Truth was set up as a response to the government’s launch of this program.

The criminals at the FDA have come up with yet another growth and rent-seeking strategy in the hopes that it can, and will, bury the competition from China and other overseas markets for supplements and everything else. On a related note, I found this article on the National Post to be a bit fun:

Facebook and the pharmaceutical industry have had an uneasy partnership in recent years. Many drug companies didn’t join the site until Facebook gave them a privilege that others do not have — blocking the public’s ability to openly comment on a page Wall.

But that’s about to change.

In a reversal by Facebook, most drug company pages will have to have open Walls starting Monday.

…The industry is concerned that users might write about bad side effects, promote off-label use or make inappropriate statements about a product, and that the comments could raise concerns from government regulators.

Perhaps open walls for Big Pharma means no more uninterrupted propaganda. I checked the Johnson & Johnson page and it really is shut down. Now, on another related note, here is one of my favorite Big Pharma ads - for Pfizer’s Celebrex. The commercial has fantastic imaging, as with all of Big Pharma’s commercials. Happy dogs, a bicycling man, dancing partners, and fluffy nighttime stars. But the ad spends a whole lot of time making it very clear that Celebrex can make you quite sick in a whole lot of ways – heart attack, stroke, skin reaction, nausea, stomach bleeding, ulcers, or, it may even lead to an untimely death. But, in the end, as the commercial says, the FDA has stated that for certain patients, the benefits outweigh the risks. That’s a nice pair of dice to roll, eh?

Big Pharma and its adherents in the medical establishment think technology can allow them to program children – via the use of pharmaceuticals – while still in the womb.

Scientists believe improving womb conditions that are less than optimal could help set certain bodily functions to work more efficiently or appropriately after the baby’s birth.

Scientists aren’t so interested in changing the diets of pregnant women (it barely gets a mention) as they are in treating the potential symptoms of an unborn child with Big Pharma’s answer to all the world’s problems – pills. If you read the story carefully, as well as related stories ’round the Internet, you’ll note that this fetal programming is all a part of the government’s war on obesity. Here’s a paragraph from the article:

“You can say it’s extreme to start medications in pregnancy, but what gives you the most bang for your buck—educating kids later or changing something in the womb for a short period of time that will have an effect for years and years?” Dr. Iriye says.

So let’s not wait to educate kids – let’s go against nature and take the unknown route that is convenient for everyone and profitable for the pharmaceutical corporatocracy, and drug the kids before they are born.

Here is a snapshot of its website (below) showing just a couple of the AHA’s many sponsors: Novartis and Schering-Plough. Got a clue yet? The only ad I use to sponsor the paleo (real food) diet is the photo at the right.

Also, there’s my latest Lipid Highlight Reel for which some Big Pharma’d doctor would put me on Lipitor without ever looking at my overall picture: the amazingly low triglycerides number, my fantastic HDL, and my very healthy (and necessary) 125 LDL.

Weight @ 111
HDL=121.4
LDL=125.8 (I was shooting for 120-130, up from about 90 or so)
VLDL = 11.8
Triglycerides = 59
Cholesterol/HDL = 2.18
Vitamin D 25-Hydrox = 77 (In Feb in Michigan)
