Because We Must Laugh

I love (and loved, as a kid) the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts. They are so entertaining and filled with an abundance of smart humor. I have always thought that Don Rickles is one of the great comedians of all time. (I am currently reading Rickles’ Book: A Memoir.) Watch this snippet of Don Rickles from a Dean Martin Celebrity Roast for the magnificent Sammy Davis, Jr. The entire segment breaks every rule in the modern book of political correctness – these days will never return. This was television not too long ago, when I was a kid. Nowadays, the Oprahized, Dr. Phil-addicted, hypersensitive, “offended” masses who purport to be the luminaries of tolerance would imprison people for hate crimes for performing this bit in a private club, let alone on television.

Yet, as these folks say, they laugh about black and white “because we must laugh.”

Terrific video, but then again, back then folks weren’t as PC as they are today. Just about a year ago the NYT ran an article entitled, Surviving the Obama Comedy Crisis:
A Report From the Front Lines in the cartoon humor section. One funny, but not really funny comment was by Jay Jaroch, writer, “Real Time With Bill Maher”:

There will be no humor in the New Order. You’ll learn that in the re-education camps”. For all the feministas out there here is one sure to get your gander up by none other than Groucho, ” How do you feel about women’s rights?
I like either side of them.” — Groucho Marx. Then this from the Flummery Digest, “Political correctness allows for two basic types of complaint: that people who behave the same are treated differently, and that people who behave differently are treated the same.”

Oh lord! This stuff would never get past the commissars of decency we have now. My own daughters have friends, who I’ve pointed out… and my girls agree, that these “friends” for all of their whining about “fairness” etc. and being open minded and tolerant, will mock them for their views if they don’t toe the PC line. So much for tolerance, eh? Do like we do and we’ll consider that “diversity” do, or think otherwise and you’re branded some sort of uncouth neanderthal. Who needs friends like that!
