Here is an amazing series of photos taken at a junk yard that was collecting Cash for Clunkers remains. Note all the SUVs, and mostly, the great condition of many of the vehicles. FYI: if you are at work, your filter may not let you get to this website – it is an AR-15 forum. Thanks to Steve for the link.

wow. those jeeps make my ’97 Subaru look pretty junky, but don’t think i’m not going to drive the thing into the ground; 165,000 miles and runnin’ strong!
and the stats he lists at the end are so depressing, though unsurprising.

My father is no longer alive and I am glad he hasn’t seen this, it would have given him apoplexy. He was an engineer who also lived through the Depression, no matter how much money he made, he always saved EVERYTHING and he loved every part, piece, screw, nut, or gear and always could find a use for something and make it run no matter how old it was. To see these perfectly good vehicles wantonly destroyed, not to mention the economic destruction this process contributed to, he would have thought it was a sin. Tell me again why they did this–because of global warming?

Many of the cars crushed due to cash for clunkers were in good condition. Those vehicles could have been put to better used by charities that operate car donation programs. Those charities would have either sold them or given them to the poor.
